Network Design - Leased lines - Dark Fibre Optics

A leased line provides a data connection between two given points. A Typical leased line is used by a business to connect one office to another, or to connect an office to a Point of Presence (POP). Similar to an ADSL connection a leased line is always active but not normally shared with other users, this ensures a given level of quality (data speed). The cost of a connection is a usually a fixed monthly rate. Factors affecting the monthly fee are the distance between the 2 end points and the speed of the connection.

Fibre Optic networks are similar to a leased line but carry much faster connections. These fibre optic connections can be split into 2 or more lines (multiplexing). Fibre optic connections are used when the infastructure permits and when very hi-speed connections are required; up to 10 Gigabit. Dark Fibre refers to the fibres laid in a cable that are not currently in use (no light is transmitted) these dark fibres are often referred to in potential networks, meaning a 'new' fibre optic connection.

Pricing is very much based on location and data speed required. Speeds up to 2 Gigibits can be achieved in Southern France especially around well serviced areas. The Tarn and Garonne departments in Southern France are well serviced with a good fibre optic networks, this gives the area a distinct advantage when location is determined by availability of hi-speed data connections.
